Firetec CB Units
These are commonly called AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, and should not be confused with SYSTEMS.
Firetec® CB units consist of standard cylinders with plugs with varying predetermined melting points, which trap the pressure within.
They have no moving parts, and are totally independent of electricity. When the bulb is subject to the predetermined heat, (bulbs are available in 7 specifiable response temperatures), the bulb melts releasing the cylinder contents. The release is spread locally be a daisy wheel dissipater.
Firetec® CB models are available with cylinder sizes from 500 mls up to 12 litres, and with a wide range of proprietary foams, powders and gases.
They are very useful low budget fire suppression devices, but only when the actual point of outbreak of fire can be predicted, such as with known hot spots in industrial processes.
They provide little or no protection against fires that have not started in their immediate vicinity, other than as a whole compartment, or room flooding aid.
They are not suitable for the safe protection of multiple items, or even specific items if in draughty environments such as in engine compartments with cooling fans.
They are popular in small marine craft where water cooled engines are common. However some marine users can be unduly influenced by their bargain basement price, and place far more reliance on CB units than was ever intended by their designers.
